Why Buy Bagels When You Can Make Them at Home with 5 Ingredients

Sure, in the first few weeks of social distancing you have multitudes of stuff to do: update your journal, binge-watch your favorite TV shows, spring clean your abode, and try a new hobby. Now that you have nothing else to be busy about, why not try making your own bagel at home with only five ingredients?

Other complicated recipes require a trip to the grocery or supermarket, but this will probably just need a visit to your pantry. Speaking of which, nothing beats a fresh bagel that straightly came out of the oven and besides, learning to make your own will save you more.

The surprise ingredient is the Greek yogurt

You also don’t need to be a baker just to make this because, we repeat, the recipe only calls for five ingredients: Greek yogurt, salt, baking powder, salt, and egg. Are you surprised about the yogurt?

Apparently, it is instrumental in making your bread crunchy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. Plus, it will be high in protein and less in sugar.

How to Bake

First, pre-heat your oven to 375 degrees. In a bowl, mix these three ingredients: three-fourth tsp of salt, one cup of flour (you can use regular or gluten-free, depending on your preference), and two tsp of baking powder.

Before you put the Greek yogurt into the mixture, drain any excess liquid and then use a whisk (or your hands if you’re OK with it) to incorporate the newly added component to your dry ingredients. After this, you will have a dough that is slightly crumbly.

Don’t forget to sprinkle flour while kneading

Knead your dough in a flat surface (this is a good arm workout) and make sure that you sprinkle flour every now and then to make sure it doesn’t stick in your hands. Then, divide it into four balls and start rolling them to form a rope.

Make a loop with the ropes and pinch the ends together so that it makes a circle. Separately place them on a baking sheet with parchment paper before brushing them with an egg white wash.

Here’s the fun part: you can place anything you want to season your bagel, be it cinnamon, sesame seeds, Himalayan salt or garlic powder, just use whatever is available in your pantry. If you want, you can also add chocolate chips or raisins into the mixture.

Pop them into the oven for 25 minutes and you’ll notice a beautiful golden brown exterior. Just a precaution: while baking, it would probably smell like something sour but it isn’t a cause of concern because the aroma comes from the yogurt.

Now, you don’t have to buy bagels again

Once it is done baking, wait for 15 minutes before eating. Now, you’ll never need to buy bagels again.
